Anthony D. Higgins

January 1, 1933 ~ November 27, 2020 (age 87)


Anthony D. Higgins, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Friday of November 27, 2020, at Embrace Hospice of SC, after a long and courageous battle with Congestive Heart Failure. The family is very grateful for everyone who took care of “Papa” along the way.

 Anthony was a friend to everyone he met, with his smile and a quick joke to make the conversation light.  Anthony was born January 1, 1933, in Birmingham Alabama to John L and Helen D Higgins.  He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, James, and John and survived by a younger sister, Carolyn. His family later moved to Wake County, NC where Anthony spent his childhood. According to Anthony, one of his greatest achievements was becoming an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America.  In 1951, Anthony joined the Armed Forces at Fort McPherson Georgia. He served for 8 years where he earned the Good conduct medal and the National Defense Medal.  Anthony met the Love of his life and best friend while he was in Georgia, Norma Moen. It was love at first when they went on a blind date. They dated for 9 months and were married on October 1, 1955 at the base chapel.  Anthony graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1961.

Some of Anthony’s favorite past times were camping and flying radio controlled airplanes. He and his family loved camping at Myrtle Beach and Badin Lake. He loved to work on projects around the house and to help others whenever a need came up. He was a member and an Elder at Amity Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC.  He is receiving his rewards in heaven for of his hard work here on Earth.

Anthony is survived by his wife of 65 years, Norma Moen Higgins; daughter, Toni Moriarity and husband Tim, of North Myrtle Beach, SC; son, Alan Higgins and wife Debbie of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; Daughter Julie McCarthy of Charlotte, NC; Grandchildren includes Natalie Newell, Karen Britton, Chris Higgins, Evan Higgins, and Dillon McCarthy; Great-grandchildren, James Britton, and Addison Higgins; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
