Barbara Jean Balderson

Barbara Jean Balderson, 84, of Surfside Beach, formerly of Laurel, MD, died Friday, January 15, 2021 at her home.

Barbara was born in Washington, D.C. to the late Reuben and Jane Smith.

She was an Assistant Director of EEOC, Civilian at Fort Meade Army Base. Barbara also volunteered in the Georgetown and Waccamaw hospital gift shops for many years.

In addition to her parents, Barbara is preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth Smith, Robert Smith, Wellington Smith; one sister, Evelyn Kidd.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Thurl Dorman Balderson Jr.; two sons, David T. Balderson (Tina) of Murrells Inlet, SC and Michael E. Balderson of Olney, MD; two daughters, Susan E. Austin (Dave) of Myrtle Beach, SC and Carolyn J. Ballantyne of Skyesville, MD; two sisters, Jane Ankers and Betty Matthews; seven grandchildren, Jesse (Jody), Nikki, David (Erica), Cory, Kyle, Cole and Melissa; four great grandchildren, Jackson, Jemma, and twins expected in April along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A small family service will be held on January 22, 2021 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Conway, SC. A service for extended family and friends will be held once Covid restrictions are lifted.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, www.stjude.org, to fulfill Barbara’s love of children.
