Barbara Andrews Slager, 98 years old, went to be with the Lord on October 5, 2024, in Myrtle Beach, SC.  Barbara, also known as Bonnie, was born on September 28, 1926, in Glastonbury, CT, to Robert Washburn Sawin and Julia Mansfield Swain. 

Barbara had one son, Brian Richard Slager and a daughter Julie Anne Slager Mims.  Barbara graduated from the University of Maine, where she was a cheerleader and awarded the title of “All Maine Woman”, which was the highest honor a student could receive.  She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.  She graduated with an English degree.  She also worked on a master’s degree in library science.

She married her high school sweetheart, Henry (Hank) Joseph Slager in 1949 and moved to New Orleans with Eastern Airlines.  In the early 50’s, they moved to Miami, to New York, back to Miami, and then to Atlanta in 1970.  When Hank retired in 1986, they moved to Palm Coast, Florida.  Their love story lasted for 65 years, until Hank’s passing in 2014.  Barbara moved to Myrtle Beach, SC in 2021 to be near her daughter.

Mom served as a director on the board of Doctor’s Memorial Hospital.  She also ran the gift shop in the hospital for many years.  She volunteered at various organizations wherever she was.  She was very kind to everyone she met.

She found enjoyment in entertaining, boating, fishing, golf, and playing bridge.  She and Hank traveled throughout the world.

She will be remembered for her kindness and her generosity towards others, and she lived with her strong Christan values.  She was long time member of Grace Lutheran Church in Miami and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Palm Coast.

She is survived by her son Brian Slager (Alicia) and daughter Julie Mims (Tom), two grandchildren, Kimberly Slager Austin and Michael Mims, and her great grandchildren Cadience and Klayton.

There will be a Celebration of her life at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Palm Coast, FL at 2:00pm on December 6th, 2024, and a service at the family church, Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church, in Jonesport, ME, in the summer of 2025.

Cremation Services Direct (843-651-1194) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
