David Lawrence Shannon Obituary

David “Dave” L. Shannon, of Myrtle Beach, SC, a beloved father, brother, and friend, passed away on the evening of July 22, 2024, at his home. David was born on March 13, 1951, in Canton, New York. He was the third child, and second son of Walter and Theresa Shannon.

David’s life was marked by diverse interests and contributions. As a child he was very active. He loved playing youth hockey, with his father Walt as his coach. He was also involved in boy scouts, having achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduating high school in Lafayette, NY, Dave served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam war. His dedication to duty and sacrifice for his country exemplified his character and commitment to his family.

A proud father of three sons, he cherished every moment he spent with his children throughout his life. As an avid sports fan, he cheered passionately for his favorite teams, including the NY Rangers and Oakland Raiders, sharing the excitement with family and friends. He also was an active member of his community. Taking after his father, Dave coached youth hockey in Camillus NY, instilling discipline, teamwork, and a love for the game in young athletes. He also volunteered as a member of the pit crew with the West Genesee High School marching band.

As a hardworking entrepreneur, David co-owned Marwol Products in Syracuse, New York, and later managed Castle Liquor Store in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He had a strong work ethic that earned him respect within the community. Beyond his professional pursuits, David had loved spending time at the gym and the pool. He also had a sweet tooth; whether it was a slice of pie or a decadent chocolate cake, he appreciated life’s simple pleasures.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Theresa Shannon, his brother Walt Shannon, and his sister Carole Dwyer.

He is survived by his sons Douglas Shannon of Camillus, NY, Michael Shannon (Angie) of Queen Creek, AZ, Patrick Shannon (Kelley) of Albany, NY, his granddaughter Julia Shannon, his sister Martha Meegan (Dan), his brother-in-law Bob Dwyer, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.

A short visitation will be held at 9:30AM on Saturday, August 17th at the entrance to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Camillus, NY, followed by a funeral mass at 10AM. Livestream is available at https://stjosephscamillus.org/live-stream for those who cannot attend.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Horry County Council on Aging (HCCOA.org).
