Don graduated from James Ford Rhodes High School in Clevland in 1951 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Bowling Green State University in 1955. Shortly after completing his education, he served his country with distinction as a Navigator in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Don was on active duty from 1955 to 1958 before joining the reserves as a navigation instructor. He retried as a Captain in 1967 after an honorable military career.
Professionally, Don built a successful career in the lumber industry. He retired as General Manager of Kessel Lumber Company in Keysar, West Virginia, in 1999. Prior to that role, he served for many years as General Manager of Hinchcliff Lumber Company in Hendricks, West Virginia. Earlier in life, Don held various jobs that showcased his work ethic and determination, including working as a paperboy and a repo man.
Don’s personal life was enriched by his loving family and his many interests. He is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Marsha Wehr; his sister, Beverly (Ken Mahalko) Wehr of Strongsville, Ohio; five children, Sean Wehr of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Bill Wehr of Elkins, West Virginia; Heidi (Stanley) Mullennex of Elkins, West Virginia; Rob (Deb) Storch of Troy, Pennsylvania; and Jonathan (Michelle) Storch of Troy, Pennsylvania,; eight grandchildren, Zoe, Eli, Beth, Izzy, Abby, Kate, Tyler Jay, and Garrett; three great-grandchildren,; Sutton, Vera Ray and Letty; several cherished nieces and nephews; and two beloved cats, Gracie and Honey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Dorothy Wehr of Strongsville, Ohio; his sister, Shirley Bales; and his first wife, Gretchen Wehr with whom he shared 34 years of marriage until her passing in 1990.
Throughout his life, Don found joy in numerous activities. He enjoyed bowling, snow skiing, camping, jogging--and above all else—golfing and exercising. An avid golfer with a deep love for the sport’s challenges and camaraderie, Don achieved the rare feat of scoring a Hole-in-One during one of his games…more than once.
Faith and community played an important role in Don’s life. He was a founding member of the Snowshoe Ski Resort, a proud supporter of the YMCA and the Elks Club Lodge # 1135 of Elkins, and a member of the American Legion Post 172 in Columbia, SC. He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in North Myrtle Beach where he participated in many church activities. His spiritual nature guided him to live with kindness and generosity toward others.
Don will be remembered for his warm heartedness and playful sense of humor. Those who knew him will cherish memories of his thoughtful nature and the joy he brought through jokes and teasing. His generosity extended not only to those around him, but also to causes close to his heart.
