Doreen E. Coleman Obituary

Doreen E Coleman, age 85, of Myrtle Beach, SC passed away on June 1, 2025 surrounded by her loving family.  She was born in Wilkes-Barre,Pa to the late John and Althea Davies Lunnie.  She was known for her spirit, strength, generosity and her unwavering dedication to her family and friends.

 

Doreen, as a young adult, became proficient playing the flute and worked hard to share her talent with her children with varying degrees of success.  She was always involved in her children's activities from coaching softball and swim teams to leading Girl Scouts.  She was enormously proud of her children. As her father once quipped, “There wasn’t a criminal in the group”!

 

Doreen and her late husband, James Coleman, were married for 55 years and raised four children in Ogdensburg, NJ. They owned and operated a Carvel store for 13 years. After retirement, they moved to Myrtle Beach, SC. Doreen became an active member of the Island Green community.  Always a social leader, she helped organize cruises, card and golf games, theatrical performances and other outings for her many friends

 

Doreen is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Coleman and her sister, Mary Cavella.    She is survived by her children Diane (husband Bill) Ljungquist, Jim (wife Julie) Coleman, Karen (husband Mike) Plaza , Sandy (husband Pete) Gatti and Beloved companion, Edward Barnes.

 

“Gram” will also be missed by her 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren.  Doreen is survived also survived by her siblings John Lunnie, Bill MacLunny, Anne Leo, Nancy Baker, Elaine Perta and numerous friends who were an important part of her life.

 

Doreen’s best advice was “If you have the chance to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance!”  Her legacy continues in all of us who were fortunate enough to be touched by her love.

 

A time for family and friends to gather will be arranged at a later date. The family is requesting in lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to Lower Cape Fear Life Care Hospice (lifecare.org/donate/) to honor their compassionate care.
