George Henry Sommerer, 86, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and formerly of Collingswood, NJ, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 4th, 2022, while at the Grand Strand Medical Center.
Born in Philadelphia on July 19, 1935, George was one of 12 children born to Alice Nickolie and William H. Sommerer Sr. As a young man, George enlisted in the U.S. Army and later drove a truck for Schmidt's Brewery. He took pride in his safe driving record, logging more than one million miles without an accident.
George retired in 1997 and moved to Myrtle Beach, where he could be closer to his second love, golf. When he wasn't playing golf, George was eager to share his love of the game with younger generations, working until recently at Shipwreck Island Miniature Golf.
George found joy in bringing smiles and laughter to those he cared about. He will be remembered by family and friends as a comedian with a bottomless pocket of jokes and a full head of long transparent hair.
He is remembered by his loving wife of 50 years, Margaret (Peggy) Sommerer of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; daughter, Linda Sommerer of Levittown, Pa.; and stepdaughter, Lori Dunn of Blue Lake, Calif. He also leaves behind three siblings, Donna Scott, Rosemary Suissa and Bruce Sommerer, all of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Amanda Purdy, Thomas Curry, Jr., Tyler Thigpen, all of Pennsylvania, Jennifer Hague of Delaware, and Katie Cook of New Jersey; two step-grandchildren, Jessica and Cory Dunn, both of California; six great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews; and his hairy companion, Noodles.
George is reunited with two daughters, Rosemary Purdy and Joan Errickson; son, George Sommerer, Jr.; stepson, Robert Dunn; two grandchildren, Fred Purdy III and Christina Cramer; eight siblings; and a fur angel, Shep.
Memorial Services will be held 2:30 PM Thursday May 12, 2022, at South Strand Assembly of God Church in Murrells Inlet.
