Joseph W. Tyler Sr, 76, of Surfside Beach, SC died Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Tidelands Waccamaw Hospital. He was born April 24, 1949, at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA.
He was the son of the late John Francis Tyler, Sr. and the late Margaret Alice Priddy. He was the brother of John (deceased), David (Colleen) of New Jersey, Michael (deceased), Margaret (Peggy) (deceased), Mary (deceased), Patricia (deceased), Richard (deceased), Brian of Pittsburgh, and Mark (Diann) of Pittsburgh.
He will be missed by his loving wife Cheryl Tyler (Verosko) of 56 years. He was the loving father of Joseph Jr of Myrtle Beach, Sheila (deceased), Laura (Lynn) of Virginia, Matthew Chip (Anne) of Myrtle Beach, and Jennifer (Derek) of Virginia. He was a grandfather to 10 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, and an uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He was a man of faith. A member and elder of his beloved Surfside Beach congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was baptized on May 13, 1973, at Clairton High School. He loved talking to people about the Bible and sharing the hope of the future and everlasting life. He was employed by Horry County Schools as bus driver for bus #23 - St. James High School and Burgess Elementary. He loved looking after his students, singing to them, and making them feel special. He loved his job, his coworkers, and everybody at the St. James and Burgess Bus Office. He was awarded the first ever Driver of the Year Award for HCS in 2025.
He loved his wife’s cooking and baking. She nicknamed him her “cookie monster”. He had a passion for music and singing, always having a song ready to add to any conversation. He had a great sense of humor and loved making people smile and laugh. His presence and smile lit up the room. He was a very hardworking man to the very end, who cherished his wife and family deeply. He was one in a million, a ray of sunshine who will be dearly missed by all.
Services to be held Saturday, January 24th at 3:30pm.
