Kenneth Sorensen Obituary
Kenneth Sorensen, 78, passed away peacefully at his home on June 30th, wrapped in the arms of his loving wife and companion of 46 years, Carol Van Alphen-Sorensen.
Ken was born in Jersey City in 1948 to the late Charles and Vivian (Gurney) Sorensen, moving to Cliffwood Beach, NJ in his early teens. In 1965, he proudly joined the U.S. Marine Corps, completing basic training at Parris Island and continuing his training at Camp Lejeune. He honorably served his country through 1971, with deployments and assignments in Vietnam, Cuba, the Philippines, and Camp Pendleton. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne, and his sister, Deborah.
Following his military service, Ken built a life of hard work and dedication. He was employed at the Morton Salt facility in Perth Amboy, NJ, before he and Carol embarked on a proud chapter as entrepreneurs, owning and operating the C-K Family Deli in South Amboy, NJ, for nine years. After selling the business, Ken worked for Pitney Bowes at several of their New Jersey locations. Upon retiring, Ken and Carol headed to South Carolina to enjoy the sunshine and the ocean. Ken found great peace in retirement, especially while walking the local beaches and piers.
Though he loved carpentry, making improvements to his homes, hosting backyard barbecues with friends, and swimming in his pool, Ken’s favorite role in life was that of a grandparent. He treasured every moment spent with his grandsons and truly loved being their "Pop." He also had a deep love for dogs, holding a special place in his heart for boxers, especially his beloved dogs, Moe and Buddy.
Ken and Carol are deeply grateful to their daughter Joan, who gave up so much to take care of him over the past three years while working a full-time job as an operating room nurse. Joan loved and cared for him deeply, and she was there in a flash whenever he needed help, especially during the last year as his health started rapidly declining.
In addition to his beloved wife, Carol, Ken is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Sorensen of Maryland; two step-daughters, Joan Roselli-Hornyak (Robert) of Conway, SC, and Kathleen Roselli-Salerno of Collierville, TN; three grandsons, Tyler Salerno (Sarah), Zackery Salerno (Eva), and Cody Salerno; and his precious new great-granddaughter, Lexi.
Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ken's memory to a dog shelter or rescue of your choice.
