Martha Van Loan Obituary

Martha Van Loan, a distinguished artist renowned for her contributions to New Realism and her evocative portrayals of animals, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of artistic excellence and heartfelt mentorship.

Born in 1942, Martha's passion for art blossomed early, leading her to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Syracuse University, where she graduated in 1964. It was during her time at Syracuse that she met her future husband, and together they journeyed across the United States, eventually settling in Sacramento, California, and later in Oregon. Martha earned her Master of Fine Arts in Visual Design from the University of Oregon in 1970.

Throughout the 1970s, her work was infused with social and political commentary, reflecting the complexities of the era. An innovative spirit, Martha merged fine art with emerging technologies, incorporating electronics and light sources into her pieces. By the 1980s and 1990s, she became celebrated for her realistic depictions of purebred dogs and horses, capturing their essence with unparalleled depth and sensitivity.

Martha was also a dedicated educator, teaching fine art painting part-time at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. She inspired countless students with her knowledge and passion for art. Her works have been showcased in various exhibitions, including ArtFields in Lake City, South Carolina, with her piece "Dreams of a Clear Day" highlighting environmental concerns. This ability to intertwine art with pressing societal issues solidified her place in the art community.

An avid Irish Wolfhound breeder, sighthound handler, and artist, Martha was active in the dog show scene during the 1970s and 1980s. She was the owner and handler of the best in show dog “Catch the Wind Liona”, founded a well-known coursing club in Colorado, and was a prominent figure in confirmation and coursing events, primarily on the West Coast. Her beautiful artworks in acrylics, pastels, and prints now grace the homes of thousands of dog show enthusiasts, and she was frequently seen as a vendor at shows around the nation, showcasing her exceptional wares.

Martha leaves behind 3 Stepchildren, a community of students, family members, and art enthusiasts who will forever cherish the time spent with her and the indelible mark she made on their lives. Her legacy continues through her art, inspiring and captivating future generations.
