Nellie Jean (Makin) Updegraff Obituary

Nellie Jean Updegraff (Makin), aged 69, passed away on June 25, 2024, in Conway, SC. Born in Johnstown, PA, on October 25, 1954. She was a beloved figure in her community and a cherished member of her large family.


Nellie attended Richland Senior High & Greater Johnstown Vo Tech, creating many friendships along the way. After school Nellie worked and lived in downtown Johnstown. While at home one one-night in1977 Nellie was awaken by rising waters and had to seek refuge on the second-floor balcony of the rushing flood waters. That night Nellie survived that great Johnstown Flood of 1977.


 She worked at Condotels in the Housekeeping department before eventually starting at Kroger's Grocery Store in Carolina Forest. Nellie worked her way up to Assistant Deli Manager before retiring from the Company.


Nellie's life was marked by her love for her family and her passion for gathering with them. She is survived by her children, Tom Rohde (LeAnne), Gary Updegraff Jr. (Kristi), Cristy Cannon, and Dona-Jean Updegraff; her sister, Judy Shrader; her brother, Eric Makin; and her grandchildren, Landon, Liam, Levi Cannon, Tyler Rohde, Breanna Brown, Gabby Rohde, Ryan Rohde, Amber Ruffing, and Jim Rohde. She also leaves behind two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Lee Updegraff Sr.; her parents, Norman James Makin Sr. and Elizabeth Marie Makin (Starke); Brother's Bill Makin, Bobby Makin, Randy Makin, Norman Makin Jr & Wife Mary Jane; Sister JoAnne McCleester (Makin), Nancy Gilchrist (Makin) and Donna Kline (Makin) & Husband Harvey Kline.


Nellie enjoyed her moments at Valley Dairy in Richland and the Huddle House in Conway, often reminiscing about her days growing up with her numerous siblings in Pennsylvania. Her love for shows like "The Golden Girls" and various crime series was well-known among her friends and family.


A memorial service will be planned for a later date.


Cremation Services Direct in Myrtle Beach, SC, is assisting the family during this time.
