Paul James Herman, 77, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital.
Born on April 26, 1948, in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, Paul was the son of the late Lester Herman and Lillian Moyer Herman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Gary Herman, and his sister, Patricia Rummings.
Known affectionately as “Hermie” to those who loved him, Paul shared a remarkable 55-year marriage with his devoted wife, Sandra K. (Croak) Herman. Together, they built a life rooted in love, partnership, and unwavering support for one another. Paul often said, “With his boots and her brains, they could conquer the world.” Guided by that determination, they built their log cabin on 37 acres in Woolrich, Pennsylvania.
Paul served his country with honor in the United States Army during the Vietnam War; assigned to Bravo Company (B Co), 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Paul was awarded a Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 1960, two Overseas Service Bars, and the Expert (M-14) Medal. His military service remained a source of great pride throughout his life.
Following his service, working as a glass cutter mechanic, Paul dedicated 20-year career to GTE Sylvania in Montoursville, Pennsylvania and (OSRAM Sylvania) Hillsboro, New Hampshire. Paul retired from the Hillsboro plant before relocating to York, Pennsylvania.
Retirement brought Paul and Sandy to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, drawn by the greatest joy in Paul’s life — being close to his daughter, Jennifer Herman, and his granddaughter, Chelsie Herman. Being surrounded by what he lovingly called “his girls” brought him endless happiness.
Paul will be remembered for his warm personality, quick wit, and natural ability to strike up a conversation with anyone he met. His easygoing nature, sense of humor, and genuine kindness made him a friend to many and left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Paul is survived by his loving wife, Sandy Herman; his daughter, Jennifer Herman; his granddaughter, Chelsie Herman; his brothers, Chester Herman and Ronald Herman; his niece, Jamie Reilley; and many other nieces and nephews.
