Philip Connor Winstead Jr., 88, of N. Litchfield Beach, Pawleys Island, SC, passed away on November 24, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Born in Mullins, SC, he was the son of the late Philip Connor Winstead Sr. and Hilda Renfrow Winstead.  Phil earned his undergraduate degree from Davidson College, his Masters of Education from Appalachian State University, and his Doctorate of Education from Duke University.

He first taught graduate classes at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL.  He then worked with the Education Lab Research Triangle in Durham, NC.  In 1972 he began his work as the Director of Research and Planning at Furman University until retiring in 1999. 

Phil served as president of his senior class of Mullins High School in 1953 and was the past president of Greenville Sister Cities with Bergamo, Italy.  He served First Presbyterian Church of Greenville, SC as an elder, Sunday school teacher, and basketball coach. Upon retirement, he moved to N. Litchfield Beach and became a trustee, elder, and Sunday school teacher at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church.

Phil’s legacy is his love for his family, his love of learning and teaching, and his love for serving God in many capacities.

In addition to his parents, Phil was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Benjamin Eugene Brooks, Jr. and his sister, Mary Dick Winstead.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Hazel Wehunt Winstead; 3 daughters, Beth W. Madray (Don Nichols) of Pawleys Island, SC; Hilda W. Brooks, of Greenville, SC; Connor W. Kern (David) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; brother, Powell Winstead (Trudy) of Winston Salem, NC; and 7 grandchildren:  Chandler, Rachel, Alexandria, John Connor, Mary Katherine, Hannah, and Victoria.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on December 13, 2024, at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church.  A reception will immediately follow the service in the Holtzclaw Fellowship Hall.
