Robert Elwood Payne, lovingly known as “Bob,” passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025, at the age of 83.

Bob was born on October 28, 1941, and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. After his time in the military, he built a meaningful life through hard work, eventually retiring from JCPenney after more than 20 years of dedicated service, having also worked with Alpo and Iron Phoenix.

Bob had a true gift for working with his hands. From building porches and fixing things around the house to maintaining the perfect yard, he was always happiest when he had a project on the go. His family lovingly referred to it as “piddling”—he was never one to sit still for long.

He loved the outdoors, sunny days, and especially the beach. After making Myrtle Beach his home, Bob became the one who always arrived first—canopy set up, chairs arranged, cooler stocked—ensuring everyone else could simply relax and enjoy the day. He found his greatest joy in simple moments surrounded by the people he loved.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Tresha Payne, and his children and stepchildren:

Lisa Edwards (Dave), Sharon Payne (Antonio), Darlene Wilms (Chris), Theresa Dorsey, Regina Ebert (Dale), Curtis Payne, Charles “Tony” Kilgore (Melissa), Christopher Kilgore, and Donna Bean (Jeffrey).

He was a proud grandfather to David Edwards Jr., Nick Edwards, Ryan Rutherford, Saimone Whitfield, Shavonne Grate, Mark Dorsey Jr., Sarah West, Krystal Hlavka, Nicole Ebert, Anthony Payne, Christopher Payne, Alisha Dodson, Anthony Kilgore, Jakob Bean, Ryleigh Bean, and Jaden Kilgore—along with 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Bob’s legacy lives on in the laughter, love, and unforgettable memories he shared with his family and friends.

A memorial service to celebrate Bob’s life will be announced at a later date.
