Samuel Rodgers Calhoun, age 69, passed away peacefully at home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on February 7, 2024, surrounded by family.
Sam was born on March 15, 1954 in Highland Park, Illinois, son of James K. Calhoun and Barbara Beall Calhoun. He grew up in Glencoe and Barrington Illinois and graduated from Barrington High School in 1972. Shortly after graduation he began a 30 plus year career in customer service in the propane industry. Later he enjoyed working at 2 resorts in Massachusetts and in Myrtle Beach.
Sam had a passion for singing in the church choir, playing handbells, and serving the Lord. He was a dear friend to many and the first to volunteer his time to help others.
Sam enjoyed the outdoors biking, then hiking and one of his proudest achievements was in October of 2020 when he became an Ultimate Outsider, visiting each of South Carolina’s 47 state parks. Sam loved taking long walks at Huntington Beach, playing board games, spending time with his family, and watching baseball as a lifelong Cub fan.
Sam will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, love of the outdoors, devotion to his family and faith. Sam is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Karen (Reynolds) Calhoun, their children, daughter Daisy Calhoun Lindas of Chicago, Illinois, son John (Stephenie) Calhoun of Racine, Wisconsin, precious grandson Evan Lindas, his brother Thomas K. Calhoun of Aiken South Carolina and sister Beverly Whitby of Bradenton, Florida.
A memorial service will be held on Friday March 15th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Waccamaw United Methodist Church in Pawley’s Island, S.C.
