Beloved wife and mother Susan Norris Nadeau, 79, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away on July 31, 2024. She was born to parents William Clyde Norris and Vivian Samuel Norris, on April 25, 1945, in Baraboo, Wisconsin. She lived a life filled with friendship, family, love, and adventure.
Susan grew up in Belmore, New York on Long Island. At the age of 15, she moved to Granville, Massachusetts where she eventually met her husband, Richard Nadeau, in 1964. They were married on October 31, 1964, in Granville, Massachusetts. Together they raised their daughter, Angela Nadeau McCune. The family of three lived in several states including Pennsylvania, Illinois, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. They eventually settled in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where they have lived for the last 47 years.
Susan worked as an administrative assistant early in her career while supporting her husband as he studied Nuclear Physics at the University of North Carolina. Susan then took her turn and studied English at Guildford College and eventually earned a degree in Elementary Education from Westfield State College. Susan also earned a master’s degree and beyond in Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina.
Susan loved children and worked as a 4th grade teacher for many years at both Lakewood Elementary and Forestbrook Elementary. Helping young people discover a passion for learning was her true joy in life. She was a leader in technology education and also taught as a teacher in residence at Coastal Carolina University.
She eventually became an Assistant Principal at St. James Elementary School where she worked for over 20 years. She finally hung up her lanyard in 2012 at 67 years old. She continued to volunteer at St. James Middle School until 2018, keeping an eye on her grandchildren Chandler and Gracie. During these years of volunteering, she toured the country with her husband Richard. They spent months traveling the 50 states living the retirement of their dreams.
Everyone who knew Susan felt her kindness and generosity. She paid attention to detail and remembered to check in on things, even when people thought she wasn’t listening. She will be missed especially by her two grandchildren, with whom she spent countless hours driving to school, playing cards, rehearsing lines, watching Charmed and The Walking Dead, getting ready for dance competitions, Christmas shopping, and making everyday a day to remember. Susan was the family sports fanatic watching hockey, soccer, football, baseball, etc... She was a huge fan of all University of South Carolina sports - especially girls' basketball. She was also a huge fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Green Bay Packers. No family event passed without multiple card games breaking out - Ooh Ooh, Can I Buy That?, Oh Hell, Chinese Checkers, Pictionary, Parchessi, Tuck and the list goes on and on. She loved taking a ride and getting lunch with her husband at Olive Garden, River City Cafe, El Cerro, Walk-Ons, Longhorns, and Outback. She played bingo and bunco regularly and she never missed an opportunity to smile and meet someone new.
Susan is survived by her husband Richard, daughter Angela McCune (Mike), grandchildren Chandler and Gracie McCune, sister Billie Lou “Sis” Boyd, brothers William Norris (Lori) and Kenneth Norris (Karen), nieces Virginia Dolan (Tom), Victoria Wright (Greg), and Veronica Boyd, nephew Michael Norris (Cara), and great-nieces and nephews Briana (Travis) Austin (Jazmin), Noah (Jena), Caitlin, Zachary (Hannah), Steven, Tommy (Sarah), and Angela’s mother-in-law Bev McCune.
