William Tracy LeGrow, 88, died Thursday April 16th at his home in Conway, S.C. He was born on September 9, 1937, in Hanover, N.H. He was the son of the late William James LeGrow and Helen Tracy LeGrow. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rose Reynolds LeGrow; his children Dr. Tracy LeGrow of Huntington, WV, Dr. Chris LeGrow (Dawn) of Huntington, WV, Michelle LeGrow Aubin (Brad) of Conway, S.C. His grandchildren Dr. Kimberly Hanchett of Myrtle Beach, S.C, Stephanie Aubin of Conway, S.C, David LeGrow (Stephanie) of Huntington, WV, Samuel LeGrow (Bella)of St. Albans, W.V., and Nicole LeGrow of Huntington, W.V. and his great grandson Rhett LeGrow of Huntington, WV. In addition, William is survived by his sister Joan Hyde of Murfreesboro, T.N. and many nieces and nephews in Tennessee, Vermont and British Columbia, Canada.
Bill grew up in Sharon, VT. He graduated from South Royalton High School in 1955. He then attended Lyndon State Teacher’s College and earned his teaching degree in 1959 where he was the catcher on the baseball team. Bill earned his master’s degree in Reading at Keene State and his Educational Administration Certification at SUNY- New Paltz.
Bill began his teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in South Pomfret, VT where he taught 5th and 6th grade. Over the course of his teaching career, he taught in Woodstock, VT, Warwick, NY, Monroe-Woodbury, NY and returned to Warwick to finish his career in education as the principal of Kings Elementary School.
Bill was an active member of the community. He was a volunteer firefighter at Engine Company #3 and was Secretary of the Warwick Fire Department. He was a Deacon of the Warwick Dutch Reformed Church. He was a member of the Mason’s and a Shriner, playing trombone in the Shrine band.
Bill had an active coaching career including Warwick Little League and Junior Varsity high school soccer. For many years he was a referee for both high school and college soccer. Bill taught many of his friends and their children how to ski and often helped run the weekend ski races at Mount Peter Ski area.
Never one to be idle, Bill always had an extra job. These included working at Camp Pinnacle boy’s camp in Lyme, N.H., helping his grandfather at Tracy’s Garage in Sharon, VT He spent many years working on the weekends at Corwin’s greenhouse in Warwick, NY. When he retired from teaching, he worked at Toys R’ Us putting bikes together, ushering at Saratoga Racetrack in Saratoga, NY, and consulting for Scholastic Book Company.
Bill was an avid fan of all Boston sports teams, even in the.” lean years. He loved spending time at the beach and was the consummate “Trail Boss” for many happy family vacations. Bill and his family spent many vacations camping with a close group of friends who have remained lifelong friends.
Bill enjoyed time on the golf course. He spent many hours travelling and watching the multitude of sporting events that his grandchildren participated in and was a much-requested field trip chaperone. He was “dad” and “grandpa” to many children who came to know him through their interactions with his children and grandchildren.
Bill’s kindness and bright smile will be greatly missed.
At Bill’s request, there will be no service. A private burial will be held in Queensbury, NY at the family’s convenience. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crescent Hospice 1516 East Hwy 501 Unit 101, Conway, SC 29526 or your local cancer hospital or treatment facility.
